CE Marking

The acronym "CE" represents the French expression "Conformité Européene," denoting "European Conformity" in translation.

In Europe, numerous construction items, such as doors and glazing products, must adhere to the harmonised European Norms (hENs) to guarantee compliance with uniform technical standards across the continent.

CE Marking is Mandatory

CE Marking is a requisite requirement, as per the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR), when a Harmonised European Standard is in place, like in the cases of "Sealed unit manufacture, Window/Door manufacture, or Supply and Installation of Windows/Doors."

Look for the CE Mark on Glazing & Doors

It is crucial to verify the presence of the CE logo on double-glazed windows as it indicates compliance with hEN standards. Prior to purchasing replacement windows, it is important to check for this marking. hENs are applicable to various types of glass, including basic float glass, coated glass, toughened glass, laminated glass, and energy-efficient glass.

However, it is essential to note that CE marking should not be mistaken for compliance with Building Regulations. CE marking is a self-declaration made by the manufacturer, confirming that the product meets the requirements of the Construction Products Directive. Its purpose is to facilitate a fair comparison of performance characteristics and enable trade across Europe.

Nevertheless, it is important to understand that CE marking alone does not serve as independent proof of the glazing product's manufacturing quality.

Compliance With CE Marking Requirements

To ensure compliance with CE marking requirements, a glazing manufacturer must fulfill various obligations. These encompass:

  1. Specifying the product categories, such as casement windows, tilt/turn windows, or residential doors.

  2. Establishing the essential product attributes, including the following for the UK:

    a. Strength of incorporated safety devices.

    b. Absence of hazardous substances.

    c. Thermal performance measured by the U-value.

  3. Providing evidence of conformity with these attributes.

  4. Establishing Factory Production Control (FPC) protocols to ensure consistent manufacturing quality.

  5. Generating a Declaration of Performance.

  6. Affixing the CE Marking either on the product itself or its packaging.

Self Certification of Compliance

To demonstrate adherence to the applicable standards, a manufacturer is required to establish a technical file comprising a written test report from a Notified Body, serving as evidence of product performance.

Manufacturers will personally certify that their products satisfy the stipulations outlined in the Construction Products Directive. The contents of the technical file must substantiate this declaration.
